Protection & Control Officer – Job Vacancy in Toronto, Ontario – Canada

Job Accountabilities:

  • Prepare technical reports on work program activities. May be required to contribute to the general administration duties of the district.
  • Periodically supervise staff in assigning work, checking work and giving instructions.
  • Carry out protection and control work responsibility on equipment as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot abnormal/improper equipment performance, identify, locate and correct problems.
  • Assure adherence by others to contract conditions as assigned.
  • Perform and/or witness acceptance testing.
  • Consult with Supervisor on problems and abnormal conditions.
  • Perform all activities in accordance with standards and procedures. Report to Supervisor on efficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Inform Supervisor of facilities that require review/evaluation. Prepare recommendations as required.
  • Coordinate own activities with others to carry out assigned work.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance pertaining to P&C equipment to other groups as requested by Supervisor.
  • Contribute to the training of Protection and Control staff. Instruct others in the operation of related equipment.
  • Carry out or arrange for minor modifications or special requirements on protection and control equipment as requested.
  • Utilize and maintain test equipment in performing protection and control work.
  • Provide suggestions for repairs/modifications or replacements.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria:

Education:

  • Requires an engineering knowledge of electrical and electronic theory to participate in the work program pertaining to the protection, metering, control and telecommunications for operation and maintenance of the electric power system. Requires the ability to prepare clear, concise and effective written documentation, to provide technical advice and guidance to others, and to participate in the preparation of designs and specifications.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired in either a four-year university education in an appropriate field such as electrical engineering or the equivalent.

Experience:

  • Requires experience to become familiar with a variety of work activities on Protection & Control metering and telecommunication equipment.
  • Requires becoming familiar with commissioning, problem analysis and maintenance to ensure satisfactory installation and operation of equipment.
  • Requires becoming familiar with the area of operation, the location of the major pieces of equipment, the relationship between other regional and Head office personnel, methods and procedures governing the work involved.
  • A period of up to two years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

Difficulty:

  • Problems may occur in determining the most practical and efficient methods for carrying out work programs, or where uncommon difficulties occur in the system.
  • Requires evaluating all factors relating to the situation, considering past practice and precedent, past similar circumstances and attempting to develop an approach consistent with sound economic and technical practice.
  • Requires deferring unprecedented technical problems to Supervisor for direction.
