Senior Marine Systems Technologist – Job Vacancy in Victoria
SMST 1 – Engineering Design (Time =75%)
- Perform engineering and mechanical/marine systems studies, design, failure investigations and analysis, technical evaluations, cost estimates, and options analysis for new equipment or modifications to existing equipment and systems.
- Prepare engineering change specifications.
- Prepare preventive maintenance and repair specifications.
- Provide drafting services.
SMST 2 – Project Management (Time = 15%)
- Conduct project management duties.
- Provide monthly project updates but not limited to report to the client including cost, schedule and risks.
- Update and maintain the EAOP.
SMST 3 – Environmental, Safety and Training (Time = 5%)
- Ensure quality, environmental, and safety regulations are followed and any changes are communicated to their supervisor.
- Consult with HSSE to understand new policies and ensure management understands the adverse or positive impacts these have.
- Ensure training is kept current.
SMST 4 – Complete other tasks as directed (Time = 5%)

Education and knowledge –
- A 3-year post-secondary Diploma of Technology in Marine Systems Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a marine or offshore environment in the last 10 years.
- Experience in a design office setting.
- Project management experience is considered an asset.
- Strong command of AutoCAD software and ability to produce detailed design drawings, in addition to a proficiency in Microsoft applications.
- A working knowledge of the major Classification society Rules, SOLAS and Transport Canada.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, planning and organizing abilities with excellent interpersonal skills.
- A strong team player with the ability to work independently.
Training and relative work experience –
- Ability to obtain a security clearance of Level II.
- Be conversant with MS Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Strong delegation and time management skills, with initiative and follow-up capabilities.
- Good understanding of Health and Safety programs.
- Project management experience is considered an asset.
- Sound understanding of DND internal workings and how it maintenance system work.
- Familiarization with ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001.
- A working knowledge of the major Classification society Rules, SOLAS and Transport Canada is considered an asset.
Physical requirements –
- Able to climb tanks steps, ladders, and shipboard ladders.
- Able to climb from dry dock deck level to the inside of the ship bilges a number of times.
- Able to work in various weather conditions (rain / cold / snow / etc.).
Supervisory and leadership role –
- Occasionally provide guidance/training to others/coordinate teams.
