Job Summary:

The incumbent fabricates, installs, and maintains traffic control devices and parking meters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and install traffic control devices and parking meters.
  • Perform regular inspections and respond to complaints relating to malfunctioning devices.
  • Paint and maintain public roadways, crosswalk and traffic line markings.
  • Perform general labourer duties including but not limited to sweeping, shoveling, lifting, packing, hauling, digging, and transporting materials or supplies.
  • Set up traffic control signs and devices.
  • Perform flagging and traffic control duties.
  • Compile statistics and prepare reports.
  • Ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that safety procedures and standards are followed by personnel throughout the department.
  • Act as Transportation Labourer, Heavy Equipment Operator 1 or Traffic Systems Leadhand, as assigned.
  • Other related duties.

Working Conditions:

  • Continuous exposure to dust/dirt, fumes/odors/noise on a daily basis and temperature extremes/inclement weather when performing duties and travelling between various work locations.
  • Works 10-hour shifts, Monday –Thursday.
  • Early start times are required during the summer.
  • Must be available for off-hour emergencies.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • 1 year progressive related experience and 6 months on the job training.
  • Course work in welding, traffic signal electronics, compressors and parking meters.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set and be a team player.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.

Certifications required within one year may include but not limited to:  Standard First Aid Level C with CPR; Traffic Control Course; Fall Arrest, Hazard Assessment & Control, Electrical Overhead, WHMIS & Transportation Dangerous Goods.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
