Distribution System Planning Engineer   – Job Vacancy in Toronto, Ontario – Canada

General Accountabilities:

  • Conduct technical/economic/regulatory impact assessments and other specialized technical studies to determine distribution system needs related to distribution stations, lines and distributed generation.
  • Develop alternatives and preferred solution; and facilitate delivery of solution through suppliers and service providers.
  • Recognize areas requiring study or actions; recommend and participate in programs that should be undertaken to improve performance or to avoid problems.
  • Present solutions, producing necessary documentation to substantiate recommendations.
  • Provide guidance to, and work with, other interested groups and individuals in the implementation of recommendations.
  • Be responsible for preparing portions of the Investment Plan related to Distribution Asset Management programs and projects.
  • Administer and assist manager in the planning of work programs and development of budget.
  • Be responsible for preparing submissions to compliance and regulatory bodies.
  • Analyze costs, including labor and material, and provide explanations relating to variances.
  • Ensure the plan and execution schedule satisfies the asset and customer needs.
  • Define and prepare stations, lines and distributed generation projects and programs.
  • Define scope of work or program work specifications to appropriate level of detail and definition.
  • Work with services providers to manage risks and ensure estimates of appropriate quality.
  • Develop/obtain estimates for work.
  • Develop business cases and obtain release of funds.
  • Monitor, oversee and redirect programs and projects during the execution phase.
  • Coordinate activities with multiple service providers and stakeholders.
  • Resolve problems through analysis and application of specialized technology or theory.
  • Provide necessary technical direction to service providers.
  • Work with service providers to ensure capabilities to perform required work.
  • Negotiate performance targets and evaluate and communicate lessons learned to improve future processes and work accomplishment.
  • Maintain an awareness of advancing technology developments in distribution telecommunication, automation, monitoring and protection and control systems.
  • Monitor the status of distribution system and asset standards and carry out, or suggest modifications and additions.
  • Assist manager in identifying resource needs and developing/mentoring new staff.
  • Represent the unit in discussions and negotiations with customers, stakeholders, regulatory authorities and suppliers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Up to 8 years of experience with the planning, assessment, design and/or maintenance of equipment and distribution system is required.
  • Must have detailed knowledge of electrical theory and principles underlying the design of electric power systems. This knowledge is normally acquired through the completion of four years of University engineering training.
  • Good working knowledge of the Hydro One investment planning and accounting systems and processes would be an asset.
  • Requires knowledge of engineering science, business administration, project management and electric power system.
  • Requires application of mathematical and statistical knowledge and skills to perform analytical studies on performance and design of distribution system and assets.
  • Requires knowledge of technical writing.
  • Requires broad experience related to design, performance, commissioning, operation and maintenance of distribution system and assets.
